Definition What is the “environment”? The surroundings where people, animals, and plants live Human-Environment Interaction: How people change the environment, and how they are changed by the environment.

How the Environment Affects People What are some ways that you are affected by the environment you live in? Allergies Clothes: Summer vs. Winter Safe neighborhood vs. dangerous neighborhood Flooding

How People Affect the Environment How do people affect the environment? Building dams, buildings, factories Creating highways Recycling Pollution: Air and Water Destruction of natural habitats Burning rainforests Endangered species Landfills Poaching Water Conservation

Region 4th Theme of Geography

What is a region? Region: An area on Earth that is defined by at least one shared (common) characteristic (physical or cultural).

Why use regions? They help break the world down into smaller, more manageable pieces. They help us understand patterns in our world.

What are examples of common characteristics that regions might share? Religion Landforms (mountains, desert, rainforest, etc.) Climate Language Government/leaders Cultural characteristics (hobbies, foods, values, etc.)
