AMERICA CLAIMS AN EMPIRE

THE U.S. ACQUIRES ALASKA in 1867 Alaska was purchased from Russia for $7.2 million 2 cents an acre “Steward’s Icebox” because people thought it was a dumb idea Alaska

U.S. TAKES HAWAII America’s love for sugar leads to rich plantation owners Ideal for navy bases Pearl Harbor Captain Cook first brought interest to the islands. Chief Kamehameha united the 8 major island under his leadership and started a monarch & trading sandal wood. US brought traders & missionaries. Missionaries stayed and brought disease. Started harvesting sugarcane and Americans wanted more. So Americans established large plantations and even brought in workers from China, Japan, & Phillipines

U.S. TAKES HAWAII Led by Sanford Dole, American plantation owners form a secret group, Hawaiian League Goal: overthrow the monarchy Force King Kalakaua to sign a new constitution by gunpoint, “bayonet constitution” Deprived most Hawaiians the right to vote & forced Hawaii to give the US Pearl Harbor has a military base

MONARCHY OVERTHROWN Queen Liliuokalani becomes queen & announces she is not going to follow the bayonet constitution US Marines surround the royal palace, aiming machine guns & cannons Liliuokalani surrenders

Hawaii becomes a state President Cleveland was upset & wanted to restore the queen President McKinley annexed Hawaii in 1898 (Congress voted) formally became a state in 1959 Congress formally apologized in 1993
