W.P.I.T.L Sportsmanship Curriculum 2018-2019

Sportsmanship Fair and generous behavior or treatment of others, especially in a sports contest.

Sportsmanship Good sportsmanship is more than shaking hands with your opponent. It’s a way of conducting yourself that says a lot about you and your school.

Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is how a player acts on the field of play, before, during and after the event.

Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is a demonstration of generosity and genuine concern for others. It is a concrete measure of the understanding and commitment to fair play, ethical behavior and integrity.

Sportsmanship Sportsmanship is a blending of cheers for “your team” and applause for the “opponents,” observing the letter and spirit of the rules, and showing consideration for others.

Sportsmanship & Respect Sportsmanship is the “golden rule” of athletics – treating others as you wish to be treated. Treat others the way you would like to be treated yourself. Often gain respect if you give it first. Sportsmanship is respect – respect for others and one’s self.

What’s your role? As a participant, your job is to do your best at every practice and competition – both as an athlete and supportive teammate.

What’s your role? Part 1 Treat opponents with respect. Shake hands before and after the game, and avoid verbal or physical action that is disrespectful.

What’s your role? Part 2 Follow the rules of the game.

What’s your role? Part 3 Remember that you represent your school, avoid any behavior that would embarrass or shame these groups.

What’s your role? Part 4 Cooperate with coaches, teammates and officials avoid inappropriate language.

Know that participating is a privilege, not a right. What’s your role? Part 5 Know that participating is a privilege, not a right.

What does sportsmanship look like?

What does sportsmanship look like? Encourage teammates. Cheer them on and applaud their efforts. Know and follow the rules of the game. Give your best effort everyday – in practice and in competition. Respect the officials and their decisions – even when it isn’t what you want to hear. Respect your opponent. Avoid name calling and dirty play.

What does sportsmanship look like? Accept responsibility for your actions and those of your team. Avoid arguments. Address disagreements away from the field. Play fair. Respect yourself, your opponent and the game. Follow the direction of your coach. Set a good example for teammate.

Example of Sportsmanship

Mallory and Sara were on opposing teams in a national softball game in 2008 when Sara hit the first home run of her career. When Sara hurt her knee and was unable to run after crossing first base, Mallory and a teammate carried her around to home plate. If Sara’s own team mates had done this then she would have been out and the game would be lost.

"Good sportsmanship goes beyond the game; it starts with respect." ~      "Good sportsmanship goes beyond the game; it starts with respect." ~

Discussion Questions 1. What is sportsmanship and why is good sportsmanship so important? 2. How do you display good sportsmanship in the WPITL? 3. True or False: Participating in the WPITL is a privilege, not a right.
