Early years Abhinav Bindra was born in an affluent Punjabi Sikh family. He did his initial formative education at St. Stephen's School Chandigarh.[5] His parents had an indoor shooting range installed at their home in Patiala, Punjab. His Mental Coach was Amit Bhattacharjee, who has been closely associated with him since the beginning of his career. Bhattacharjee and Lt. Col. Dhillon (who was also his first Coach) were the first ones to spot the potential in Abhinav Bindra was the youngest Indian participant at the 2000 Olympic Games. His current coach is five-time Olympic shooter Gabriele Bühlmann from Basel, Switzerland, with whom he trained in Germany before the Olympics. In the 2000 Olympics Bindra achieved a score of 590, placing him 11th in the qualification round, and did not qualify for the finals since only the top eight competed in the finals.

Due to excellence in the shooting sport, Abhinav Bindra has been bestowed with some of the most prestigious awards in India. In 2000, he received Arjuna Award, while in 2001 he was entitled to Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna, India's highest sports award. In 2009, he bagged one of the India's most prestigious civilian award - Padma Bhushan. Apart from the awards, he has been bestowed with cash prizes for winning the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Abhinav Bindra, is the current World and Olympic Champion in Air Rifle shooting. He is the first ever Indian to win an individual Gold Medal since 1900 – the year our country participated in the Olympic games for the first time. His unparalleled achievements in the shooting arena have made the nation proud and he has been bestowed with honors from a very young age due to his consummate performances on the international stage. He received the Arjuna Award at the young age of 17 and has been the youngest recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awards – the highest sporting honor in the country at 18 years. Abhinav has also been decorated with the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honor, in 2009 after his historic Gold Medal win at the Beijing Olympics.
