Focus Skills: Understanding Open-Ended Questions Creating a Good “Lead” Writing Varied Conclusions

Good Writing All good writing has Purpose (reason for writing) and an Audience (intended readers)

Purpose: Introduce a student Audience: teachers, classmates.

Interview & Research Skills: Open-ended Question: question designed to produce a free response rather than a direct, or one-word response. Examples- Closed: How old are you? Open: What makes a person “mature”?

Open-ended Questions Four of these interview items are close-ended, and four are open-ended. Make two columns on your paper and copy the item down into the correct column.

Categorize Close-Ended Open-Ended

Close-ended vs. Open-ended Describe your dream job. Do you have a most embarrassing memory? What was a moment that changed your life? What is your favorite subject? Do you play a sport? Tell me about your favorite trip. How many siblings do you have? What is something unusual about your family?

1. Describe your dream job. Open-ended 2. Do you have a most embarrassing memory? Closed 3. What was a moment that changed your life? Open 4. What is your favorite subject? 5. Do you play a sport? 6. Tell me about your favorite trip. 7. How many siblings do you have? 8. What is something unusual about your family?

Choose two of the close-ended questions and re-write as open-ended questions. ###

Write Down Your Number Find Your Person

In your own words What’s the difference between a close-ended and open-ended question? Think about it…what questions can you ask tomorrow for a good interview?

Student’s Questions Do we have to ask each other the same questions? Do all the questions have to be open-ended? Do we have to write about every question we asked? Can we start our writing already? Does it have to be typed?

Now you are ready to develop interview questions. Next Skill: Good Intros and Conclusions…
