Topic 5 Rome and the rise of Christianity Mr. Kallusingh World History

Rise of Rome Roman government was a republic which is a government in which people elect officials Most influential governing body in Rome was the senate Rome was split into two social classes patricians-nobles and plebeians- lower class

Rise of Rome After the founding of Rome it took them 200 years to conquer Italy Rome fought Carthage in the Punic Wars as they were the two Mediterranean powers 1st Punic war Rome won because they made boarding bridges to make a water fight a land fight 2nd Punic war Rome won after years of being defeated by Hannibal by staying in their walls and surprise attacking Carthage 3rd Punic war Rome wipes out Carthage and controls the Mediterranean

From republic to empire After Rome was done expanding it was faced with many problem one being a large population of people that could not find work As time went on the gap between rich and poor began to grow more and more Social unrest eventually led to a civil war that caused Rome to allow Italian allies citizenship

From Republic to empire After Gaius Marius soldiers became loyal to their generals instead of being loyal to the senate After the rule of Caesar the senate did not have a lot of power as their numbers grew to 900 and power was transferred to the Emperor Augustus is considered to be the first Roman emperor and he created a position that would last till the end of Rome

Culture and society in the roman world Trade was a huge part of the Roman empire and most goods came into Rome and then spread out through the empire Rich people usually had two homes and went to banquets to show off their wealth, poor people lived in crowded apartments Slaves were used for many different jobs and the more important slaves would be treated better, slaves could be set free or buy their freedom

Culture and society in the roman world Men controlled Roman families as they had more rights, but as time passed women got more rights owning property Romans built aqueducts that carried water from the mountains to the cities

Christianity Even though the Jewish community was given freedom to practice their religion they eventually revolted against the Romans as they feared Roman control would weaken their religious beliefs As Jesus began to spread Christianity the Romans feared he would eventually lead a revolt similar to the Jewish revolt so they had him killed and tried to abolish Christianity

Christianity Since Christians would not stop speaking out against Roman way of life they were killed The Roman hope of crushing Christianity did not work and eventually it becomes the official religion of Rome in 391 AD
