Chapter 15 – The Roman Empire Vocabulary

Vocab Emperor- Absolute ruler of an empire

Vocab Pax Romana The peace that Augustus brought to Rome Roman Peace that lasts 200 years

Vocab Tariff Taxes placed on goods brought into the country (imports)

Vocab Gladiator- Fighters who fought animals or one another- many were slaves, prisoners of war, criminals, or poor people

Vocab Inflation- A period of ever increasing prices

Vocab Barter- Or exchange without using money

Vocab Domus- Rich person’s house in Rome

Vocab Rule by Divine right- Official policy that stated that the emperor’s right to rule did not come from the people but from the gods

Vocab Juris Prudentes- Special lawyers and legal writers that helped Roman judges re-write laws

Vocab Freedmen- Former enslaved people who could have chance to be involved in government

Vocab Standardized- (Laws) Same in all parts of empire

Vocab Census- Population count that made sure that people did not pay too much or too little taxes
