2 Julius Caesar Julius Caesar was a successful military leader who stopped unfair taxes and gave land to the poor.

3 Julian Calendar Julius Caesar also created the Julian Calendar, which is similar to the calendar we use today.

4 Murder! Members of the Senate murdered Julius Caesar because they thought he was taking too much control over the government.

5 Civil War After Caesar's death, many rulers fought over control of the government.  Some thought Rome was too big to continue being a republic.  Others wanted one strong leader to stop the fighting over leadership. 

6 Emperor Augustus Caesar
In 27 BC, Julius Caesar's grandnephew, Augustus Caesar, became the first Emperor of Rome. As Emperor, he took control over the Roman Republic government.

7 Pax Romana Augustus Caesar was admired for creating peace after 100 years of civil war.  This time of peace was called the Pax Romana, or “the peace of Rome”.
