CS Sociology Marriage

Starter… Task: Using your knowledge of what Sociology is, write down three sociological questions relating to marriage.

Learning Objectives To understand the different forms of marriage. To analyse the advantages and disadvantages of arranged marriages.

What is marriage? Marriage refers to the legal contract between individuals that creates kinship.

Arranged Marriage Arranged marriages are marriages arranged by people other than the couple getting wedded. Arranged marriages are a popular tradition in India. Parents of Indian children feel they are older and wiser and can therefore find a suitable match for there children.

Task State the factors which parents are likely to consider when finding a suitable partner for their children and factors which aren’t all that relevant.

Forms of Marriage This occurs when a person marries then divorces, then remarries, then divorces and so on. E.g. Henry VIII This occurs when a woman has more than one husband. This occurs when a man has two or more wives. This was acceptable in the USA in the 19th century in the Mormon religion. This occurs when a person has one or more husbands or wives. This is an illegal practice in Australia.
