3 Taboo Look at the card in front of you. You must now try to explain what the word in BOLD is to your partner without mentioning the key words below it

4 What does Islam teach about divorce? 1.The basic principle for Muslims is that marriage should last until death. 2.Muslims value family life very highly, therefore if the marriage can be saved then it should be. 3.Divorce is a last resort, only to be used when all attempts at saving the marriage have failed.

5 Men divorcing women There are two main ways in which a Muslim man can divorce his wife: a)The husband says ‘I divorce you’ to his wife. There is then an IDDAH period of waiting to allow reflection and hopefully reconciliation. If the couple do not reconcile after three months, the divorce goes ahead. b)The husband says ‘I divorce you’ three times to his wife at the same time. They are now divorced. When a man initiates a divorce he must return his wife’s Dowry, and make sure she is financially ok, he is responsible for Any children.

7 Women divorcing men If a woman wishes to divorce her husband, she can ask for a divorce by ‘Khul, which means she can have her case presented to a Shari’ah court. A Muslim woman can seek a divorce for the following reasons: Adultery Desertion Lack of maintenance by her husband Harm by her husband Insults to her or her parents Breaking any other part of the Nikah (marriage contract)
