ADVANCES OF GUATEMALA IN MATTERS RELATING TO TRAFFICKING IN PERSONS Guatemala, June 6, 2015 Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Inter-institutional Commission Against Human Trafficking (CIT) Primary Advances

Actions implemented in 2015: 6 ordinary meetings; 3 work meetings of the Sub-Commissions on Prevention and Assistance; First National Meeting of Departmental Networks Against Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Human Trafficking. Actions implemented in 2016: 1 ordinary meeting; 1 meeting of the Sub-Commission on Assistance, Protection and Repatriation.

Main Prevention Actions

Prevention Actions Training workshops for officers from the General Office of Migration on the crime of trafficking in persons and the referral route for identified cases. A training workshop entitled “Comprehensive Protection and Eradication of Trafficking in Persons” for officers from the Ministry of Culture and Sports, to inform them about aspects related to protection of victims and actions to combat the crime.

Prevention Actions National Programme for Awareness-Raising and Training on Prevention of Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking in Persons for primary school students (4th, 5th and 6th grade). National Programme for Awareness-Raising and Training on Prevention of Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Trafficking in Persons for secondary school students (1st, 2nd and 3rd grade).

Dissemination and delivery of materials of the “No me dejo engañar” (I do not let myself be tricked) campaign

Training on trafficking in persons for security staff from La Aurora International Airport; A dance and theatre presentation on trafficking in persons, with participation of students from public schools; • Various training workshops on trafficking in persons for civil servants at a national level.

MAIN ACTIONS RELATED TO DETECTION, ASSISTANCE AND PROTECTION

Inter-institutional Protocol for the Comprehensive Protection and Assistance to Victims of Trafficking Developed in coordination with the Secretariat of Social Welfare of the President’s Office and within the framework of CIT; Includes input and recommendations from the Human Rights Ombudsman’s Office, civil society organizations, the Public Prosecutor’s Office and other institutions.

• High-Level Meeting/Workshop to strengthen actions to combat trafficking in persons through the Departmental Networks Against Sexual Violence, Exploitation and Human Trafficking (VET Networks).

ACTIONS RELATING TO REPATRIATION

Protocol on Inter-institutional Coordination for the Repatriation of Victims of Trafficking Ensures the orderly, dignified and safe repatriation of victims.

ACTIONS RELATING TO PROSECUTION AND PUNISHMENT

Establishing a Unit Against Cybercrime 25 police officers; trained by experts from the police force of South Korea for several months, with international cooperation of the United Kingdom and technical assistance of Instituto de Enseñanza para el Desarrollo Sostenible.
