World Community Service (WCS) District 5890 Introduction World Community Service (WCS), officially launched in 1967, reflects the heart of Rotary: using service to advance international understanding and goodwill. It is exciting, challenging, and rewarding for Rotarians to participate in World Community Service projects. A WCS project is conceived when Rotary clubs from two or more countries join together to accomplish a community service initiative. The WCS program provides Rotary clubs, in search of international assistance, an opportunity to advertise the needs of their project to Rotary clubs in other countries that might be willing to provide funds, materials, and technical and professional assistance.

Goals of District 5890 WCS Efforts Assist Rotarians in Identifying & Accomplishing International Matching Grant Projects Improve Quality of Life in Under-Privileged Countries Promote International Understanding & World Peace Goals: To assist District 5890 Rotarians in identifying and accomplishing international matching grant projects. To improve the quality of life for as many people living under privileged countries as possible. To promote international understanding and world peace by facilitating cooperation and visitation between District 5890 Rotarians, Rotarians sponsoring international service projects, and people residing in under-privileged communities.

Objectives of District 5890 WCS Efforts Interface with Grants Committee Educate District & Club Leaders about Services Available through WCS Develop List of Recommended Int’l Service Opportunities Encourage Participation Between Clubs by Facilitating Cooperation & Communications Objectives: Interface with Dist Grants Committee to develop educational & presentation tools for dissemination 2) Use those tools to educate District leaders & Club Leaders about the services available through WCS 3) Develop a list of recommended international service opportunities. The project list will be prepared based upon recommendations of District 5890 Rotarians who have personal experience with the project and the cooperating Rotary Club in the host country. 4) Encourage participation between Clubs across our District by facilitating cooperation and communication.: Share knowledge and financial and human resources Share programs for Club meetings Develop partnerships between clubs Maximize the effectiveness of joint projects

Objectives of District 5890 WCS Efforts Encourage Clubs to Become Involved in WCS projects Assist Clubs in Securing Int’l Service Projects Objectives (2): 3) Encourage District 5890 Clubs to become involved in World Service projects by describing the personal and Club benefits that are derived though Rotary International service work and assisting them in becoming involved. Present a power point presentation that provides: the benefits of Rotary International service work, a menu of worthy international projects and how they can become involved. 4) Assist District 5890 Clubs in securing International Service Projects by June 30, 2008, by Answer questions. Identify a list of high-quality project opportunities. Facilitate partnering among District 5890 Clubs. Provide local Clubs with information needed to contact Rotarians sponsoring international service projects Serve as mentors for Clubs seeking matching grants from our District.

Funding Available for WCS Projects Matching Grants Individual Grants District Simplified Grants Health, Hunger and Humanity (3-H) Grants Funding Sources Available for WCS Projects Through Matching Grants, The Rotary Foundation matches contributions raised by Rotary clubs and districts for international service projects involving Rotary clubs or districts in two or more countries. The Rotary Foundation offers Individual Grants to subsidize travel of individuals or small groups (2-5 people) for qualified international humanitarian service in Rotary countries for periods of up to 60 days. Funding is provided to plan future humanitarian projects or for direct service to the benefiting community. A District Simplified Grant (DSG) is a tool Rotary districts utilize to support short-term, humanitarian projects that benefit the community Health, Hunger, and Humanity (3-H) Grants are awarded to fund long-term, self-help, and grassroots development projects which are too large (US$100,000 to $300,000) for one club or district to implement on their own.

Elements of World Community Service (WCS) The WCS Projects Exchange Donations-in-kind Disaster Relief World Community Service provides Rotarians with the opportunity to get involved in international fellowship in a variety of ways. Projects may be initiated informally on a club-to-club basis, or they may come about by using some of the tools provided by Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. The elements of WCS include: • The WCS Projects Exchange is an online, searchable database, where Rotary clubs seeking assistance from other Rotary clubs can publicize their community service initiatives • Donations-in-kind portion of the WCS pages of the RI Web site provides detailed guidelines for clubs supplying goods and receiving goods. In addition, there is extensive information about resource organizations that work with donated goods and may be able to help with a WCS project. • Through local club and district efforts, Rotarians assist disaster victims by donating to relief funds; sending shipments of food, clothing, and medicine; collaborating with local organizations that offer emergency relief; and providing ongoing assistance during long-term reconstruction projects.

Select three or four projects that may interest your club, or contact RI staff to request a tailored list of projects. Communicate with the project contact directly to explain your interest and ask for more complete information.
