Presentation transcript:

Masque of the red death steps before beginning one pager 1 – Consider the main symbols in the Masque of the Red Death and briefly explain their importance. Questions to consider: 2 – What do you think is the overall tone (author’s attitude/thinking) and intended mood (feeling for the audience)? Go back to the story and find words that are context clues to the tone of the story. Choose 7-10 from the story that relate to the tone and create mood. How does this symbol help develop the theme that death is inescapable? What could this object represent and why? What is the purpose of this object? Who is affected by the object and how are they affected? 3 – Lastly, look for some quotes that really capture the tone and mood of the story. You do not have to use the entire sentence, but find some sentences or phrases that really stand out. Copy down the sentences/phrases and make sure you note what page they are on. Do the colors or description help symbolize the object further? Prince Prospero The masquerade The masked figure The clock Any of the seven rooms mentioned in the story

Directions for One Pager 1 – On your blank sheet of paper, draw an image that is appropriate for your story. Think of the major symbols, tone and mood of the story. Draw something that is related to one of these elements. Do not copy a picture from the internet (you can look for basic ideas). 2 – Choose five keys words from the story that relate to the tone and mood. Place them on or around your illustration on the front of your paper. Key words are words that actually appear in the text that you think have power and meaning and relate to the author’s tone and mood. 3 – Choose two quotations from the story. This can be any phrase, sentence or paragraph that you think is important in the story. It should also be related to the tone and mood of the story. Make sure that you place the quotations around these passages and use MLA documentation. “And now was acknowledged the presence of the Red Death” (Poe 394). Each step is worth 33% of your grade. Neatness, spelling and following directions will also be considered.

Directions for One Pager 4 – Now for the fun stuff!! Look at your image, key words, and quotations. How do these help your illustration express the symbolism, tone, mood of the story? ON THE BACK OF YOUR ONE-PAGER, write a paragraph . This paragraph should be at least 6 to 8 good sentences. Do not give a plot summary of the story. It must explain the importance of this symbol(s) tell how the symbol relates to the overall theme and effectiveness of the story. discuss the tone and mood of the story. This part is a separate quiz grade…pay attention to all requirements above.
