The Skeletal and Muscular Systems What do you know about bones and muscles? The Skeletal and Muscular Systems Now we’re movin…

Working together to move you… Skeletal System Muscular System

The Skeletal System has several important functions - Provide support to the body - Protect internal organs - Work with the muscular system to move the body - Produce red blood cells - Store calcium, fat, and other minerals

Our bones are not hollow! Each layer of bone has its own function 4 Layers: Periosteum- Outermost covering Compact Bone- dense tissue Spongy Bone- Softer part of bone Bone Marrow- where RED blood cells are made Bone Marrow Spongy Bone Periosteum Compact Bone

Joints: where 2 or more bones meet Bones must have several other types of tissues present to have a healthy joint (ligaments, tendons, cartilage)

Important Skeletal Tissues Ligaments connect bones to other bones to provide support Important Skeletal Tissues Tendons connect muscles to bones *a common one is the Achilles tendon Cartilage is found between two bones and serves as a cushion or shock absorber

Its main function is to assist the skeletal system in moving the body Muscular System Its main function is to assist the skeletal system in moving the body

SMOOTH SKELETAL CARDIAC 3 Types of Muscles

Voluntary muscles we can control, and involuntary muscles contract and relax with out our control. Smooth Muscles: These muscles are the ones that are found in our internal organs. They help in digestion and other processes that we do not have to consciously think about. They are INVOLUNTARY. Skeletal Muscles: These must stretch and contract a lot and they are mostly all attached to the skeleton. These we can move consciously. They are VOLUNTARY. Cardiac Muscles: These are the muscles found in the heart. They are INVOLUNTARY.

Can you have 1 of these systems without the other?? NO!!!!! Bones without muscles...stiff, unmoving skeleton! Muscles without bones…a blob of muscles on the ground with no structure!

Fun Facts about your bones! Most infants are born with about 270 bones but adults have 206 bones…wait, what?? Of those 206 bones, 103 are found in the hands and feet!! Humans and giraffes have the same number of bones in their necks…crazy! The Femur is the longest bone in the human body Regular exercise actually makes your cardiac muscle stronger! That’s why it’s called cardio… The funny bone isn’t really a bone, it’s a nerve that you pinch that runs through a space in your elbow. Muscle cells DO NOT turn into fat cells when you don’t work out….EVER
