MDC Academic Advisement Calculating Your GPA Please click “NEXT SLIDE” to advance through the presentation. The information will load automatically once you move to the next slide.

GPA = Grade Point Average What is Your GPA? GPA = Grade Point Average (It is basically the same as what you remember from high school but with a twist.) There are two college GPAs of which you should always be aware: Semester – Based on the classes you have taken for a particular semester (e.g. fall, spring, summer). MDC Overall (Institutional) – The cumulative GPA for all classes taken at MDC every semester. NEXT SLIDE…

What Do You Need to Calculate Your Semester GPA? In order to calculate your GPA you will need to know a few simple things: The point value for every letter grade How many credits you earn for each class for which you are registered How to multiply, add and divide… NEXT SLIDE…

What Are the Point Values for Letter Grades at MDC? Each letter grade has a corresponding point value: A = 4.00 B = 3.00 C = 2.00 D = 1.00 F = 0.00 NEXT SLIDE…

How Do You Calculate Your Semester GPA? Step One: MULTIPLY the grade value by the number of credits to get the GRADE POINTS for each class For example: [Grade value x Credits = GRADE POINTS] ENC 1101 A (4.00) x 3 = 12.00 points MGF 1106 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points BSC 1005 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points BSC 1005L C (2.00) x 1 = 2.00 points THE 2000 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points NEXT SLIDE…

How Do You Calculate Your Semester GPA? Step Two: ADD up the total CREDITS and GRADE POINTS for the semester For example: ENC 1101 A (4.00) x 3 = 12.00 points MGF 1106 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points BSC 1005 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points BSC 1505L C (2.00) x 1 = 2.00 points THE 2000 B (3.00) x 3 = 9.00 points 13 39.00 points NEXT SLIDE…

How Do You Calculate Your Semester GPA? Step Three: DIVIDE the total GRADE POINTS by the total number of CREDITS. The resulting number is your GPA for the semester. GPA = 39.00 = 3.00 13 NEXT SLIDE…

How Do You Calculate Your MDC Overall (Institutional) GPA? Step One: Add the current semester’s grade points with the previous semester’s total grade points. Step Two: Add the current semester’s credits with the previous semester’s total credits. Step Three: Divide the total amount of grade points by the total amount of credits. The resulting number is your Overall GPA. NEXT SLIDE…

What Grades Are Calculated into Your MDC Overall (Institutional) GPA? As the name implies, only grades from courses taken at MDC will be averaged into the Overall (Institutional) GPA. If you use the Grade Forgiveness Policy, only the grade(s) (and credits) from the replacement attempt(s) will be used in this average. NEXT SLIDE…

Why Is it Important to Know Your GPA? Departments will consider certain GPAs for admissions requirements (e.g. the GPA for Pre-Core Classes as well as the Overall GPA). A certain GPA is required in order to graduate. Specific GPAs are required in order to graduate with honors (consult the Course Catalog or your major department for information). Financial aid/scholarships may depend on your GPA. NEXT SLIDE…

Why Is it Important to Know Your GPA? Acceptance into graduate and professional schools will require certain GPAs. (Note: Some graduate and professional schools may recalculate the GPA to include every class taken at the college level. This can include those taken through Dual Enrollment, transfer credits from a community college or another 4-year institution, and those for which the Grade Forgiveness Policy has been used. If you plan to apply to graduate programs, you may want to keep track of your inclusive cumulative GPA.) NEXT SLIDE…

Why Is it Important to Know Your GPA? You should know if you are in good standing (2.0 or higher Overall GPA) or nearing Warning/Probation. It’s a great motivator – having one really great semester GPA can be enough to get you going. NEXT SLIDE…

Now That You Know How to Calculate Your GPA… Make it a habit to keep track of your Semester and Overall GPAs! Good Luck!!
