MATTER

(Science bits)

MATTER Look around the classroom.  Everything, from the clothes you are wearing to the air you breath is matter.

MATTER Matter makes up everything including living things like plants and people.  It also makes non-living things such as tables and chairs.

MATTER Things as big as an elephant or as tiny as a grain of sand on a beach are matter.

General properties Mass is a general property of matter that is the amount of matter it an object. It is the amount of “stuff” there is. It is easy to confuse the terms “mass” with “weight” but they are fundamentally different properties. The mass of an object does not change from place to place. The weight of an object is determined by the force of the pull of gravity on the object. Technically speaking, weight is a force.

General properties Volume – Volume describes how much space matter occupies. For measuring the volume of liquid instruments we can use, among others things, a beaker, a graduated cylinder, a  pipette. For measuring the volume of an irregular solid, we can use the method of immersion in water. Thus ,the volume of the solid will be the difference between the final volume, which is measured when the object is within a test tube, less the initial volume. For measuring the volume of a solid geometric we usually use mathematical formulas.

Specific property DENSITY is a physical property of matter, as each element and compound has a unique density associated with it. DENSITY does not depend on the quantity of matter, only on the nature of the substance

DENSITY PROBLEMS 1. Calculate the density of the following substances and identify what substance it is. a) m = 0,5 kg; V = 185 cm3 b) m = 39300 g; V = 5 m3

DENSITY PROBLEMS 2. A ball of cork has a volume of 2 cm3. Knowing that the density of cork is 0.35 g / cm3, what is its mass?

DENSITY PROBLEMS 3. The density of tin is 7.3 g/cm3. What is the volume of a mass of 20 g?

DENSITY PROBLEMS 4. Mercury is a liquid with a density about 13 600 kg/m3 a) Calculate the mass contained in a liter (litre) of mercury. b) Calculate the volume occupied by 1500 g mercury.

DENSITY PROBLEMS 5. A prism of lead (d = 11.3 g/ml) has dimensions of 2cm x 4cm x 1cm. What is its mass?

DENSITY PROBLEMS 6. Design an experience in laboratory to check if a ring is made of gold

DENSITY PROBLEMS (Algebra LAB) 1. What is the density of a piece of wood that has a mass of 25.0 grams and a volume of 29.4 cm3? 2. A piece of wood that measures 3.0 cm by 6.0 cm by 4.0 cm has a mass of 80.0 grams. What is the density of the wood? Would the piece of wood float in water? (volume = L x W x H) 3. A cup of gold colored metal beads was measured to have a mass 425 grams. By water displacement, the volume of the beads was calculated to be 48.0 cm3. Given the following densities, identify the metal. Gold: 19.3 g/mL Copper: 8.86 g/mL Bronze: 9.87 g/mL 4. I threw a plastic ball in the pool for my dog to fetch. The mass of the ball was 125 grams. What must the volume be to have a density of 0.500 g/mL? (I want it to float of course!) 5. After throwing the ball in the pool for my dog, the ball sprung a leak and began to fill with water. How many mL of water can the ball absorb before the ball sinks? 6. What is the mass of a cylinder of lead that is 2.50 cm in diameter, and 5.50 cm long? The density of lead is 11.4 g/mL and the volume of a cylinder is. 7. An ice cube measuring 5.80 cm by 5.80 cm by 5.80 cm has a density of 0.917 g/mL. What is the mass? 8. Gasoline is a non-polar liquid that will float on water. 450 grams of gasoline is spilled into a puddle of water. If the density of gasoline is 0.665 g/mL, what volume of gasoline is spilled? 9. The density of aluminum is 2.70 g/mL. If the mass of a piece of aluminum is 244 grams, what is the volume of the aluminum? 10. A little aluminum boat (mass of 14.50 g) has a volume of 450.00 cm3. The boat is place in a small pool of water and carefully filled with pennies. If each penny has a mass of 2.50 g, how many pennies can be added to the boat before it sinks?
