Humanism: An intellectual movement at the heart of the Italian Renaissance that focused on worldly subjects rather than on religious issues. Humanists were usually Christians who believed that the individual in the here and now had an important role to play. Education was important and so was emphasis made on individual achievement.

Reformation: Martin Luther was a Catholic priest in Germany who protested corruption in the Church and proposed reform. Printing press helped spread secular ideas. Many viewed the Pope a foreign ruler and challenged his authority. Merchants resented having to pay taxes to the Church. Church leaders began to marry, have children, drink and were poorly educated

(& where TMNT got their names) Renaissance Painters (& where TMNT got their names) Leonardo Da Vinci Raphael Donatello Michelangelo The Renaissance involved ideas of humanism, centered on the concerns of humans, and away from religion. These ideas, which surfaced in art, also weakened the hold of the Roman Catholic Church on society and led people to question authority, part of what caused the Protestant Reformation.
