Scripture Reading 2 Cor. 2:11

Introduction Let us review some things that we learned about Satan. He is our adversary (1 Pe. 5:8). There is a battle between the child of God and Satan. We must know our enemy & his devices. The Christian must be properly outfitted.

Satan’s device-Temptation The word temptation comes from a Greek word meaning “testing”. Temptation is the enticement of a person to commit sin by offering some seeming advantage (Ge. 3:1-6). The serpent (Satan) made it appear that things would be better.

God allows us to be tested Someone may ask why? To put our faith to the test. It is not some cruel game that God is playing with us. The testing of our faith works patience (James 1:2-4). God also prepares a way of escape (1 Cor. 10:12).

Three Avenues of Temptation Lust of the flesh (1 Jn. 2:16). God has given us certain desires of the flesh. But with each one He has given us a lawful way to fulfill these desires. Satan wants us to fulfill the desires of the flesh in an unlawful way.

Lust of the eyes Obviously being able to see is not lust of the flesh. David looked upon Bathsheba and lusted after her (2 Sam. 11:2-4; Mt. 5:28). His lust of the eyes led him to commit adultery with Bathsheba.

Pride of life The carnal desire to appear smarter than God. It seems to me to carry with it the idea of arrogance (Rom. 1:21-22). Wisdom from God is useful, wisdom of the world is carnal (Jms. 3:13-18).

The testing of Job Job 1, 2. God allowed Satan to test, tempt Job. Job was able to endure the test without sinning (Job 2:10). James tells us that to endure temptation will result with a crown of life (Jms. 1:12).

How to endure temptation Pray (2 Cor. 12:7-9). Know what the scriptures say (Mt. 4:1-10). Flee ( Ge. 39:12). Look for the way of escape (1 Cor. 10:12). Learn from past mistakes.

Conclusion Satan will continue his relentless pursuit of us. He will continue to set before us temptations. We have plenty of help from God’s word so that we can overcome and endure.
