1 Escape from Sin Matthew 5:27-30
(Matthew 5:27-30), “You have heard that it was said to those of old, 'You shall not commit adultery. ' 28 But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” In our text, Jesus identifies: the source and snare of sin the severity of repentance and the surrender necessary to enter eternal life and escape the suffering of hell. Matthew 5:27-30

2 James 1:14 Proverbs 23:7 1 John 2:16 Proverbs 6:25
The Source of Sin (28) James 1:14 Proverbs 23:7 1 John 2:16 Proverbs 6:25 (Matthew 5:28), “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” “But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed” (James 1:14). The Heart (Proverbs 23:6-7), “Do not eat the bread of a miser, nor desire his delicacies; 7 For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you. B. The Temptation to Sin: “looks at a woman to lust for her” (5:28) (1 John 2:16), “For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.” (Proverbs 6:25 – the Seductress), “Do not lust after her beauty in your heart, nor let her allure you with her eyelids.”

3 2 Peter 2:19 Hebrews 13:3 Hebrews 11:25 Romans 6:23
The Snare of Sin (29-30) 2 Peter 2:19 Hebrews 13:3 Hebrews 11:25 Romans 6:23 (Matthew 5:29-30), “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” A. Sin Ensnares, Traps and Enslaves All Who Yield to Temptation (2 Peter 2:19), “While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.” B. The Nature of Sin Deceitful – (Hebrews 3:13), “but exhort one another daily, while it is called "Today," lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” Passing – (Hebrews 11:25), [Moses chose] “to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin.” Enslaves & Kills – (Romans 6:23), “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

4 The Severity of Repentance (29-30)
Romans 6:6 2 Corinthians 7:10 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 HYPERBOLE (Matthew 5:29-30), “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” A. Do Away with Sin (Romans 6:6), “…Our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.” (2 Corinthians 7:10), “For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.” B. Only When the Sin is Removed Can We Serve the Lord with Our Body, 1 Cor. 6:13, 19-20; Rom. 12:1-2. (1 Corinthians 6:18-20), “Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. 19 Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? 20 For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God's.”

5 The Surrender of Salvation (29-30)
Philippians 3:7-8 Luke 9:23 1 Peter 4:1-2 (Matthew 5:29-30), “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” A. The Crucifixion of Self to Live by Faith (Philippians 3:7-8), “But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. 8 Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ.” B. The Denial of Self (Luke 9:23), “Then He said to them all, " If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (1 Peter 4:1-2), “Therefore, since Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind, for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2 that he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.” V. SUFFERING OF HELL, Matt. 5:29-30.   A. Sin’s Punishment is Eternal Ruin, Matt. 10:28; Mk. 9:   B. Purity’s Reward is Eternal Life, Mk. 9:43 (Rom. 2:7).

6 The Suffering of Hell (29-30)
Matthew 10:28 Mark 9:43-44 Romans 2:7 (Matthew 5:29-30), “If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.” A. Sin’s Punishment is Eternal Ruin (Matthew 10:28), “And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mark 9:43-44), “If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched — 44 where 'Their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched. ‘” B. Purity’s Reward is Eternal Life, see Mark 9:43 above. (Romans 2:7), [Just due according to deeds], “eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality.”

7 Conclusion (Hebrews 4:9), “There remains therefore a rest for the people of God.” If you will escape sin today by repenting, you will escape hell for eternity!
