Presentation transcript:

Complements the engagement via the media and our online workshop Target participants those people less likely to be reached by the general campaign. We held 138 face-to-face conversations with 1,837 people, most of whom also completed the on-line survey Findings encouraging, challenging and to some extent surprising A historic moment 10 local authorities and 27 NHS bodies ( 12 Clinical Commissioning Groups and 15 NHS Hospital Trusts and FTs) will have the power and responsibility with the people to make decisions on local health and social care - taking control of an estimated budget of £6 billion from April 2016 A huge opportunity – the freedom and flexibility to decide some of the most important things in our lives, not just health - focus on our place and our people, making our own decisions in GM A huge challenge – local people are out of work longer, die younger and more illness than in other parts of the country. We can change this, but it won’t be easy. We need to deliver more value for the money we have. We need to do things differently – to the same high standards - to maintain high quality, safe care and we’ll have a £2 billion gap by 2021 Our goal - the fastest, biggest improvement in health, wealth and wellbeing of the 2.8m people of Greater Manchester. Our vision is to look after ourselves and each other. There’s a role for everyone, from the individual to the family, the community, the voluntary sector and the public bodies to work together In next five years by 2021 we will have delivered benefits ranging from 600 fewer deaths from heart disease to1,300 fewer deaths from cancer and 16,000 fewer children in poverty A long term deal - where we’ll need to take charge and responsibility for looking after ourselves and each other over many years

Some Findings People have a strong understanding of health and wellbeing and a willingness to take responsibility for it - most know what they should be doing, and would like to do it A challenge back - with much said about wider determinants of health, and the primacy of factors like local environment, transport, income, time and cultural norms Mental health was given as much - if not more - importance as physical health, with self-confidence, self-efficacy and motivation featuring strongly in discussions People emphasised the relative nature of health and wellbeing, and the effects of individual and sociocultural differences - and in particular the importance of transitions across the life course

Some Recommendations Invest in personal and community connections and involvement of service users and residents in design and delivery of facilities, services and information Invest in community-based facilities and activities run by VCSE groups and peer networks Use legislative powers of local government and power of any capitql spending to effect environmental changes Mainstream accessibility and inclusion, with targeted solutions for specific groups Invest in improving the Greater Manchester and locality evidence base by funding further research into identified gaps in knowledge and understanding and issues that appear to warrant deeper exploration.
