Use the painting to describe political, economic, and social motivations behind Manifest Destiny

Warm-up Name the 3 Major Westward Trails and describe their significance. 2) What is the overall effect of these trails?

Western Trails Oregon Trail- the Whitmans begin Missionary trips to minister to the Natives and discover vast, rich land for farming/opportunity. Settlers by the 1,000s leave the cities and head west with “Oregon Fever” Santa Fe Trail- William Becknell takes a trip down to Santa Fe to trade with Mexico, since borders have opened with Mexico winning its independence. Merchants and traders will follow opens New Mexico to trade and eventual settlement Mormon Trail- established by the Mormons who were escaping religious persecution… in America. They left, following the Oregon Trail before heading South into what was Mexico… or Utah. This will begin settlement of the Utah Territory.
