3 Ch 9 Sec 1: Migrating to the West
In the 1600s and 1700s, Spanish settlers spread into New Mexico, Texas, and California. However, these areas remained sparsely populated. Conflicts between the Spanish and Native American groups remained a problem. The Apaches grew more powerful and led many attacks on the Spanish colonists in New Mexico.

In 1821, a revolution ended Spanish rule in Mexico. The U.S. government recognized Mexico’s independence. Expansionists quickly began to covet the territories of northern Mexico. These Americans thought that the Mexican government and economy were weak. They wanted the territory to be American. This idea was called Manifest Destiny. The idea claimed that it was God’s plan for the United States to own most or all of North America.

7 In 1845, journalist John L. O’Sullivan wrote an influential editorial about Manifest Destiny. He wrote: “The American claim is by the right of our manifest destiny to overspread and possess the whole of the continent which Providence has given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and … self-government entrusted to us” -John L. O’Sullivan, New York Morning News, December 27th, 1845

8 Mexican independence encouraged U. S. trade with Mexico
Mexican independence encouraged U.S. trade with Mexico. Merchants from Missouri saw Mexican Independence as an opportunity to open trade across the Great Plains with Santa Fe, the capital of New Mexico. This trade benefited Mexico. However, the U.S. traders and settlers would come to threaten the security of Mexico’s border.

9 Mountain Men also traveled west
Mountain Men also traveled west. These adventurous men worked as fur trappers and explored the Rocky Mountains. They also established new trails, which settlers used to travel westward. By the 1840s, many settlers took wagon trains to the West. Commencing in springtime, the demanding journey took about five months to complete. One popular trail to the Pacific Northwest became known as the Oregon Trail.

The Mormons, a religious group, also moved west. They were fleeing religious persecution. The Mormon leader, Brigham Young, led migrants west to establish a colony on the shore of the Great Salt Lake. They called this new colony New Zion.
