Violence or Domestic Violence? Violence Refers to aggression, fighting, brutality, cruelty, and hostility. Physical aggression in response to acts of violence may be a reaction to or self-defense against violence. Domestic Violence A pattern of abusive behavior in any relationship that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner.
