Hinduism Worlds oldest religion. It has no founder. Probably started with the religious beliefs of the Aryans and the first people who lived in the Indus River Valley. A religion with many gods, and many beliefs- seven truths and reincarnation. Place of worship: Shrine/mandir Important Holidays: Holi; Diwali Major beliefs/practices: polytheistic, Brahman is the main god but there are other gods, dharma, karma, reincarnation, moshka

Hinduism- The Vedas The Vedas are written in Sanscrit, the ancient language of India.

The Spread of Hinduism Place of Origin: India Label India and color it red.

Judaism Abraham was a shepherd in Ur, when God spoke to him and told him to travel to Canaan in 1800 BC. Abraham is considered to be the first Jew. The Hebrew bible says that God told Abraham to move to Canaan and he would take care of him and his people. Place of worship: Synagogue Important Holidays: Hannukah, Festival of Lights Major beliefs/practices: monotheism, God is Yaweh. Jesus was anordinary Jew, not the Messiah or a divine person. Observation of the Sabbath (Shabat). Prayer is and important part of faith.

Judaism- The Torah The Torah is written in Hebrew, the language of modern Israel.

Buddhism Siddhartha Gautama, the man who came to be known as the Buddha, or “The Enlightened One” was born in 563 BC. He was born into a wealthy ruling family and his father protected him from the world. When he became an adult, he left the palace and saw a sick man and a poor monk. After thinking about these things, he left his comfortable palace life and began his lifelong journey. Place of Worship: Temple Important Holidays: Buddhist New Year Major beliefs/practices: Four Noble truths, Eightfold Path, no gods, free yourself from suffering, meditation, enlightenment

Buddhism- the Tripitaka The Tripitaka consists of three manuscripts: Sutta- contained the teachings of the Buddha Vinaya- contained the rules of Buddhism Abhidhamma- contained further knowledge Written in Indian language called Pali- the Buddha himself spoke Pali

Buddhism Place of Origin: Nepal Label Nepal and color it purple

Christianity Christianity was started around 15 AD by Jesus, a Jewish man who grew up in Nazareth. The Christian religion is centered around Jesus’s teachings which are documented in the New Testament of the Bible. Place of worship: church Important holidays: Christmas, Easter Major beliefs/practices: monotheism, God exists in three person (The Trinity): Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Jesus is the second person of the trinity. Prayer is an important part of faith.

Christianity- The Bible Consists of the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) and the New Testament (Accounts of Jesus’ life, death & resurrection, and teachings). Old testament written in Hebrew and the New Testament written in Greek.

Islam During Muhammad’s meditations in 610 AD, God revealed to him the religions of Islam. By 613, he began teaching publicly that there is only one God and that this God requires people to submit to him. The Arabic word for submission is Islam, and believers in Islam are called Muslim. Place of worship: Mosque Important holidays: Ramadan; Id Al-Fitr Major Beliefs/practices: Monotheism, Allah is god who is not a part of a trinity. Jesus is a prophet sent by Allah but it not divine. Five Pillars of Islam: 1. Shahadah- profession of faith. 2. Salat- prayer 5 times a day. 3. Zakat- Giving to the poor. 4. Sawm- fasting during Ramadan. 5- Pilgrimage to the Holy city of Mecca

Islam- The qu’ran The Qu’ran is written in Arabic, the native language of Mecca and the whole Arabian peninsula.
