29.2-Europe in War Student Objectives Assess the failures of the Schlieffen Plan Evaluate the reasons for stalemate during World War I Determine the victors of the Battle of the Somme

Great War Begins A/H declares war on Serbia Russia moves troops to Austrian and German Border Germany declared war on Russia and France Britain declared war on Germany Central Powers Germany, A/H, Bulgaria, Ottoman Empire Allied Powers Britain, France, and Russia Later Japan, Italy, and US Misconceptions of soldiers Remind yourself from last class the causes of World War I. What was the final/immediate cause of WWI and why did events move so quickly to push into WWI? Look at the map. Color, shade, or outline yours so that you know the different groups (Central, Allied, or neutral). Why do you think the Central Powers are so named? What were the misconceptions of soldiers when WWI started?

Stalemate and Solutions Major theatre of war-Western Front Germany facing two-front war Developed Schlieffen Plan Defeat France-then move onto Russia Plan failed-Germany forced to fight two-front war Stalemate throughout WWI High casualties-little movement/advancement Look at the map regarding the Schlieffen Plan. What are some issues the Germans may have had in executing this plan? What were issues the Germans committed in successfully executing Schlieffen Plan? What is meant by stalemate? Why was this such an issue during WWI?

Trench Warfare Digging of parallel trenches to protect themselves Huge loss of life for small advances/gains Life in trenches-horrible No Man’s Land New Military Technology Long War & Huge Casualties Germans attacked France at Verdun 300,000 men lost by each side British counterattacked at Somme 20,000 British deaths first day Half a million casualties by each side What were some of the reasons why life in the trenches were so devastating? What happened when soldiers jumped onto No Man’s Land? What were some of the new military technologies that emerged during World War I?

Eastern Front Fighting occurring on E. Front Russian/German border Fighting with A/H and Germany against Russia Russia beat A/H-then Germans beat Russians Russia huge population Not industrialized-short on supplies Russian fighting took Germany from being able to fight full force in Western Front Why did Russia play such a significant role in contributing to the Allied war effort? What were some of the major supplies that Russia was short on during WWI?

Battle of Somme ~1.2 million casualties Months of fighting 420,000 British 200,000 French 500,000 German Months of fighting Small gains for British Weakened German war effort Brand New Technologies Machine Guns, Mines, Grenades, Tanks Primary Source: Who won first day of Somme (casualties) 57,000 British 8,000 German 7,000 French
