1. Austria-Hungary issues a series of ultimatums to Serbia a. They gave Serbia 48 hours to comply b. This was not enough time for Serbian government to agree or disagree-Austria-Hungary saw this as rejection c. July 28, 1914 Austria- Hungary declares war on Serbia

5 WWI  All sides thought it would be a quick war but new technology assured that it would be a harsh and drawn out war

6 Propaganda: was used by all sides
1. Government sponsored efforts to depict the war efforts as patriotic 2. Propaganda was the most important tool in building patriotism

7 The Great War has Begun C. Great Britain proclaimed to be in the war to “protect smaller nationalities from the will of stronger aggressors” D. Germany proclaimed to be in the war to protect German existence from barbarian enemy neighbors E. World War I was the first European total war 1. every aspect of society goes into supporting the war effort 2. civilians became fair game as targets

9 Nations Take Sides Mid-August 1914- two sides at war throughout Europe
Central Powers- Germany, Austria-Hungary (and other nations) Allies- Britain, France, Russia (and other nations)

Western Front- heavy battle zone in northern France Schlieffen Plan- German plan to defeat France & then Russia

11 Bloody Stalemate Germany army quickly advances to outskirts of Paris
Forced to retreat at First Battle of the Marne Schlieffen Plan fails & Germany has to fight two-front war

12 War in the Trenches Conflict descends into trench warfare-armies fighting in the trenches Battles result in many deaths & small land gains

13 Life in Trenches Miserable, difficult & unsanitary
New weapons lead to more deaths 1916-Massive losses for both battle in Verdun & Somme

Russians push into Austria & Germany but forced to retreat

23 Massive Killing 1916-German attack French soldiers- Verdun= 300k die
British attack NW of Verdun-Somme River= 20k die Each side lost 500k men to gain 4 miles of land

24 Russia Struggles 1916-Russia suffering- many casualties (2million) & few supplies (most loss) Huge size of Russian army = formidable force Prevents Germany from sending more troops to Western Front
