Analysis Questions: Act II, scenes 1 & 2 Reread lines 171-210 on page 549. Choose a side…Mr. Van Daan or Mrs. Van Daan. Why? In line 202-205, Mr. Van Daan says, “As I have often reminded Mrs. Van Daan, it’s very selfish of her to keep this coat when people outside are in such desperate need of clothing…(he gives the coat to Miep) So if you will please sell it for us? It should fetch a good price. And by the way, will you get me cigarettes. I don’t care what kind they are…get all you can.” Explain the irony behind this quotation. Reread lines 254-310. Did Mr. Frank make the right decision? Why or why not? On page 553, lines 464-466, Anne says, “Mr. Kraler is in the hospital. It seems he has ulcers. Pim says we are his ulcers.” Explain what she means by that. Reread lines 605-636. How does Mrs. Van Daan react to Anne and Peter’s relationship? What does this reveal about her character? Describe the change in Anne and Peter’s relationship. Why do you think that there has been such a change in Anne and Peter’s relationship? Use evidence from the text/refer back to the text to support your answer.

Analysis Questions: Act II, scenes 3 – 5 When Mr. Van Daan is caught stealing food (pg. 558-559), all of the characters have a different reaction. Which character reacted the way you would react? Why would that be your reaction? On page 559 in lines 926-927, Mr. Frank says, “We don’t need the Nazis to destroy us. We’re destroying ourselves.” Explain what he means when he says this. Reread where we hear Anne’s voice starting at line 1090. At the end of that passage she says, “I want to go on living even after my death.” Explain the irony behind this quotation. Reread lines 1165-1193. Why do you think Miep hasn’t shown up in 3 days? Looking back at the same lines as question #4, would you have answered the phone? Why or why not? In lines 1373-1374 Anne says, “In spite of everything, I still believe that people are really good at heart.” How do you feel when you read those words from her diary? Why are these words so heartbreaking coming from her diary? Do you believe Anne’s words? Are people really good at heart? Explain why you think they are or they are not.
