Following Pythagoras through mathematics and art Alexia Tournaviti, maths teacher In collaboration with: Aggeliki Voya, Ilia Karyampa Members of the team: students of the Music School of Larissa From our visit to the Irakleidon Museum- Art and Maths, in the old city of Athens

our presentation A girl is saying that it will be time that she will not need maths anymore and her friends are trying to change her mind and show her that maths are everywhere, as Pythagoras was arguing… During the presentation: Some of my students and me!

our project The students cherched about: Pythagoras life (birthplace and family, education and teachers, places he visited or lived in -Greece, Egypt, Persia, South Italy) Pythagoras contribution to Maths (proof of the Pythagorean theorem, golden ratio, Number Theory-the number 10, odd-even numbers…-, connection between geometrical shapes and numbers, pythagorean table of multiplication, geometrical solids, asymmety, pythagorean triples…) Pythagoras contribution (in summary) to other sciences-issues (Astronomy, Politics, Ethics, Philosophy-he, first used this term and stated that he was not a wise man -sophos- but a man that loves the wisdom philo-sophos, Healthy nutrition, the Study of the univers which he, first, called cosmos –that means order and jewellery, Equality between men and women…) Pythagoras contribution to art (first theoretician of music, golden ratio)

our project The students also investigated the influence of Pythagoras theories in art and the fact that he inspired art: painting, sculpture, literature, music and even contemporary interior design… in a hotel on the greek island of Kos mirrors forming a pythagorean tree

Finally, Pythagoras inspired us Painting: Pythagoras puzzles Music: traditional and modern songs in pentatonic scale Theater and poetry: 1. The fair cup of Pythagoras (text written by a student and played by three students) 2. Romeo, Juliet and the Pythagorean theorem (comedy-text in verse modified by I. Karyampa (letters teacher), directed by A. Voya (theater teacher) and played by three students) 3. the projects presentation! (kind of..) all warmly applauded ! our project
