Academic Performance Evaluation for BCOM/BIB Students

What are we going to cover today? What is APE? How is APE Calculated? Outcomes of APE Academic Success Resources Available FIX

Academic Performance Evaluation (APE) The annual assessment of your academic performance – based on number of credits completed (pass or fail). You must meet the minimum CGPA requirement each year to remain and continue in BIB. - How many credits?

When Is APE Calculated? An annual assessment of your performance happens after winter term. In early June, decision is posted in your Carleton Central account under Student Records/myProgress (APE). Courses taken in summer fall and winter are used in APE calculation. Are the credits cumulative?

Outcomes of APE Evaluation The possible outcomes of the evaluation include: Good Standing (GS): CGPA requirements are met Continue in BIB Academic Warning (AW): below the CGPA requirement by no more than 1.0-point. Continue in BIB for at least one more year Continue in Alternate (CA): below the CGPA requirement by more than 1.0-point OR was previously AW and did not meet the required CGPA Removed from BIB

Statistics from Winter 2016 APE for first year BIB students The majority of students received good standing! Good Standing 32 No Decision   (less than 4.0 cr attempted) 7 Continue in Alternate 8 Academic Warning 9

APE Calculation: Background Courses carry different credit value: 0.5 cr (one term) 1.0 cr (typically two terms, or language courses) Letter Grades get converted to a 12 point scale Points are used to calculate your CGPA

APE: Letter Grades to Points Percent % Grade Point 90 – 100 A+ 12 85 – 89 A 11 80 – 84 A- 10 77 – 79 B+ 9 73 – 76 B 8 70 – 72 B- 7 Percent % Grade Point 67 – 69 C+ 6 63 – 66 C 5 60 – 62 C- 4 57 – 59 D+ 3 53 – 56 D 2 50 – 52 D- 1 0 – 49 F 0

I’m Concerned about APE: HELP!!! Attend every class Active participation Meet deadlines Stay on top of readings Ask for help when needed

I’m Concerned about APE: HELP!!! Talk to our Student Success Officer or Sprott Advisor in 710 DT Consider withdrawing from a course if you’re not doing well. Discuss with your professor and advisor. Last day to withdraw for fall term is Dec 9th. Retake the course in the winter. Sometimes waiting until summer is too late! Discuss this with your advisor. NOTE: If you repeat a course, the grade in the 2nd attempt counts - for better or worse!
