Presentation transcript:

What did you learn from Moses? Last time we discussed the “People of the Promise”, the descendants of Abraham: Isaac, Jacob, Joseph and Moses, and how God leads the Hebrew people in Egypt out of slavery. What did you learn from Moses? Today we will discuss “the call to walk in the ways of God” and “the need for a deliverer”.

The Call to Walk in the Ways of God God gives the Hebrew people the Law What did God ask the people to be and do for Him? Read Ex. 19:5-8. They were to obey Him and keep His . . . . . . . . ; and they were to represent Him to all the . . . . . . . of the earth. covenant nations The people promised that they would keep . . . . . . . . . . God’s law What was the purpose of the animal sacrifices and why did they have to be continually repeated? Read Hebrews 10:1-4. These sacrifices merely . . . . . . . . . . . ; they could not . . . . . . . . the sin. covered sin take away How did these sacrifices relate to God’s promise of a deliverer?

Instead of watching the movie “The Hope” chapter 7 we are going to watch a 14-minute chapter of another series called The Stranger on the Road to Emmaus chapter 9.3 with English subtitles on DVD.

After 40 years in the wilderness God led the Hebrew people into the land He had promised them. See death of Moses in Deuteronomy 34 and Read Joshua 1:1-5 Throughout their long history, the people of Israel continually disobeyed God. God punished the rebellion of the people in various ways, often by using a foreign nation to oppress them. But, God remained faithful to Israel and forgave them when they repented. Judges 2:11-23, Introduces the cycle of sin, judgment, repentance and deliverance during the long period of the judges, kings, and prophets.

Moses

The need for a deliverer The Hebrew people were led by Judges, and then by Kings. In the wilderness God had them build a tent (tabernacle) where they were to worship and bring their sacrifices. When they settled in the land they built the Temple in Jerusalem under king Solomon, where they continued to bring their sacrifices

Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah to come Psalms 1000 BC, Isaiah 700 BC, Zechariah 500 BC (Micah 5:2) (Psalm 22:1) (Isaiah 7:14) (Psalm 41:9) (Psalm 22:18) (Zech 11:12) (Psalm 34:20) (Isaiah 53:12) (Psalm 16:10)

God sent prophets to call the people back to Himself. Read Ezekiel 18:31 The prophets predicted the coming Deliverer who would conquer sin, Satan, and death, forever. Micah 5:2, the place of His birth Isaiah 9:6, To us a Child is born Isaiah 53:2-12, His crucifixion and resurrection

Questions Why was the Law given to the Hebrew people? What was the cycle of sin about in Old Testament times? What is the difference between the sacrifices in Old versus New Testament? The Hebrew people in Israel were first ruled by Judges. Why did the people ask for a king? Who were the first three kings of Israel? What was so special about the second king? What was the main project of the third king? What happened to the united kingdom after the third king died? Why were the two kingdom people taken into exile and where were they brought? What was the main role of the prophets and why are they so important for Christianity, which started many years later?
