Thesis Statement

What is a thesis statement? Thesis Statement. noun. A short statement, usually one sentence, that summarizes the main point or claim of an essay, research paper, etc., and is developed, supported, and explained in the text by means of examples and evidence.

Thesis Statement Mentions the name of text. Tells what you are proving (through theories supported with textual evidence). With ADH and your theme- What’s your big idea/theory related to your theme? Can stand on its own as an intellectual idea. Everything you say in the paper/presentation ties back to the thesis.

Thesis When I read your thesis, it tells me everything I need to know to understand the purpose of your paper (or presentation). Located in the first paragraph of your paper (not the first sentence). Or in a presentation it would be your first statement.

Example Thesis statement: Disney’s animated movie, The Lion King, shows how dysfunctional society can become if some classes are treated better and valued more highly than other classes.

Example Thesis Statement: Disney’s animated movie, The Lion King, shows how dysfunctional society can become if some classes are treated better and valued more highly than other classes. Names the movie and the studio that produced it. Shares what you are going to prove and hints at the theory you will focus on the most.

Example thesis statement: In Suzanne Collin’s novel, The Hunger Games, females show a huge increase in power compared to today, to the point where they are completely equal to males.

Names the movie or text and the author. Shares what you are going to prove and hints at the theory you will focus on the most.

Today (at the end of the play) Create your own thesis statement for your paper. Mention the name of the text (and author if appropriate). In A Doll’s House by Henrik Ibsen, . . . Tell what you are going to prove about the text (or characters). Hint at the main theory you will be using to analyze the text
