1 Theme is… the underlying message, or “big idea,” of a story.
It answers the question, “What message is the author trying to send?” (i.e. PURPOSE) All texts have at least one theme. Many have multiple themes. Authors illustrate theme through plot (story actions), character traits and changes, and use of literary devices. Themes must be supported with textual evidence.

2 Examples: One theme in “The Lion King” is that it is important to understand and accept the “Circle of Life.” The author illustrates this theme through the use of imagery during the opening song and the foreshadowing of Simba’s ascent to the throne at the beginning of the movie.
