Today we will be learning to: use and understand words about time read the time to half and quarter hours understand digital clocks solve simple problems about time.

Mental Activity Today you are going to count on and back in fives. I will give you a starting number. How many questions can you answer?

5, 10, 15, 20 ... What comes next? 35, 30 ... 20, 15. What is missing? How many is four fives? How many fives in 45?

Give me two numbers with a difference of 5. What is 5 more than ...? What is 5 less than ...? Give me two numbers with a difference of 5.

Main Activity Today we are going to tell the time when it is half past quarter to or quarter past.

Clockwise is the way the clock hands move. 11 10 7 8 9 5 4 2 1 3 6 12 • Clockwise is the way the clock hands move.

11 10 7 8 9 5 4 2 1 3 6 12 • The small hand is halfway between the numbers 12 and 1. When the big hand is on the 6, it is half past.

When the big hand is on the 9, it is quarter to. 11 10 7 8 9 5 4 2 1 3 6 12 • The small hand is three-quarters of the way between the numbers 12 and 1. When the big hand is on the 9, it is quarter to.

10:30 This is half past on a digital clock. 30 minutes is half of 60 minutes. Show the same time on an analogue clock face.

10:15 This is quarter past on a digital clock. 15 minutes is one quarter of 60 minutes. Show the same time on an analogue clock face.

10:45 This is quarter to on a digital clock. 45 minutes is three-quarters of 60 minutes. Show the same time on an analogue clock face.

Top Tip There are 24 hours in the day. There are twelve numbers marked on a clock. Each time will be visited twice each day – morning and then afternoon or evening.
