Who We Are A national laboratory within the Minerals and Metals Sector of Natural Resources Canada Manage a national user facility for materials and manufacturing (processing, performance assessment, microstructural characterization and computational engineering) Science for understanding and optimizing structure-property- processing relationships Facilities in Hamilton, Ontario and Calgary, Alberta

Core Competencies: Material Science Pilot-scale, start-to-finish materials processing: Materials production: alloy development, casting, rolling, forming (forging, extrusion, stamping) Enabling technologies: joining, surface treatment Scientific knowledge of the correlations between materials processing and the resulting microstructure / properties Design and produce improved products and develop codes and standards for their use.

Current Research Themes: 2013-18 Materials for Energy End-Use (Transportation, Industry and Buildings) Lightweight structures for vehicles Materials for efficient power-trains and heat / energy management Materials for energy efficient buildings and industry Materials for Clean Energy Production Materials for next generation nuclear reactors and cleaner fossil power production Materials for renewable energy: wind, support structures for solar energy Materials for Pipelines and Energy Distribution Pipeline steels, coatings, integrity prediction, crack propagation, other oil country goods, transport of CO2, advanced high-strength steels Emerging and Defence Materials Defence materials (naval, light armoured vehicles) Shipbuilding

Non-Destructive Testing NDT is a highly valuable tool as it does not permanently alter the article being inspected Used to detect flaws in critical structures and components for industries such as: Infrastructures for Energy Production and Transmission Nuclear Power Plants Oil and Gas Pipelines Refineries Civil Structures Bridges Cranes Manufacturing & Transportation Aerospace Automotive Advanced, High-End/High-Precision Products Quality Control Etc.
