1 Metallurgy Europe EUREKA Cluster
Prof. David Jarvis, Cluster Chairman Prof. Hans Fecht, Cluster Office Director European Parliament Brussels, 15th June 2016

2 There is an infinity of combinations of these different chemical elements.
We have only scratched the surface when it comes to making, manufacturing and utilising new materials in industrial applications. New materials and manufacturing will revive the competitiveness of our European economies.

3 Metallurgy Europe – EUREKA Cluster
7 Cluster Objectives: to lay the technical foundation for the discovery, design, development and deployment of the next generation of metallic materials (alloys, semiconductors, superconductors, intermetallics, compounds and composites etc.) to develop novel manufacturing routes for producing breakthrough industrial components for the following sectors: clean energy, renewables, aerospace, transport, security, computing and biomedical to integrate academic research, industrial manufacturing and end-user engineering across Europe, thus catalysing a major community effort in metallurgy to establish new high-tech factories and pilot-scale demonstration plants to generate 1000 patents and IP declarations to develop the necessary talent pipeline (PhDs, post-docs, company technicians, apprentices) and to create 100,000+ jobs within a decade

4 Metallurgy Europe – EUREKA Cluster
Resource Efficient Europe & Re-Industrialisation: to conserve natural resources and raw materials, to support the shift towards a low-carbon economy, to increase the use of renewable energy sources, to modernise our transport sector, to promote energy efficiency, - to reindustrialise our European industries. Metallurgy Europe will provide enabling, cross-cutting technologies to fulfill all of these top-level European objectives. Re-industrialisation of Europe is not possible without materials innovation.

5 Metallurgy Europe – EUREKA Cluster
Programme Features: 7 years’ duration ( ) 1 billion euros total budget needed (summation of all national funding + industry) supported by the CTOs and Directors of 300 European companies and labs, representing >10% of the European economy bottom-up definition of technical priorities, as defined by industry 17 EUREKA Member States morally and financially support, so far: AT, BE, CH, CY, CZ, ES, FI, HU, IE, IS, NO, PL, PT, SE, SI, TK, ZA several countries may support using SME scheme: UK, FR, DE

6 Metallurgy Europe – EUREKA Cluster
Programme Features: AISBL legal association incorporated in Belgium Cluster Office and secretariat is located in Ulm, Germany Industrial Board in place with 20 leading companies technical work-plan defined for the full duration, regularly updated first call announcement for projects was released in 2015 17 proposal outlines were received at stage-1 (worth 200M€, with 300+ partners) 12 projects passed the evaluation (score>75%) and have been invited to stage-2 annual summit, took place on 28th April 2016 in Stockholm topics for Call-02 have been defined for eventual release in 2016

7 Metallurgy Europe – EUREKA Cluster
R&D Topics: Light alloys and metal-matrix composites High-temperature extreme alloys and composites New and improved steels Advanced superconductors Heat-scavenging thermoelectric alloys Biocompatible metallurgy Metal-based 3D micro-parts & embedded sensors Automated additive manufacturing Combinatorial alloy development Coatings & surface protection Powder metallurgy techniques Predictive modelling and advanced characterisation Recycling, refinement, re-use and waste elimination Practically, all topics can deliver low-carbon technologies

8 7-year Technical Roadmap

9 Metallurgy Europe is the only mechanism to achieve this leadership.
Europe and partners must urgently take global leadership in metallurgy. Metallurgy Europe is the only mechanism to achieve this leadership.
