Word of the day: Progressivism Progressives sought reform and to fix the problems created by industrialism and urbanization. Warm Up: Think for a minute about the Gilded Age (the last era we studied) What problems do you remember that existed because of Immigration, Urbanization, and Industrialization?

The Progressive Era Essential Question: What problems existed at the turn of the 20th Century?

Many problems can be grouped together into categories Many problems can be grouped together into categories. You and your group members will explore these issues through primary sources.

Group Activity In each folder are 11 different primary sources. It is your task place them in groups. Which sources have things in common? Once you have them grouped, you will list them on your handout and begin filling in the evidence (what do you see in the picture?) Then, form a definition of the problem by summarizing what you see.

“Today ¾ of the people in New York City live in tenements, and the 19th century drift of the population to the cities is sending ever-increasing multitudes to crowd them. The fifteen thousand tenant houses that were the despair of the sanitarian in the past generation have swelled into 37,000, and more than 120,000 persons call them home” -Jacob Riis, How the Other Half Lives A.

B. New York Slum District, 1890

C. There would be meat stored in great piles in rooms; and the water from leaky roofs would drip over it, and thousands of rats would race about on it. It was too dark in these storage places to see well, but a man could run his hand over these piles of meat and sweep off handfuls of the dried dung of rats. The packers would put pointed bread out for them; they would die, and then rats, bread, and meat would go into the hoppers together. -Upton Sinclair, 1906 The Jungle

Gallons of Alcohol F.

G. Proponents of Prohibition included many women reformers, who were concerned about alcohol's link to wife beating and child abuse, and industrialists, such as Henry Ford, who were concerned about the impact of drinking on labor productivity. Advocates of Prohibition argued that outlawing drinking would eliminate corruption, end machine politics, and help Americanize immigrants. -Digital History, Prohibition

People's Party Platform. Adopted at St. Louis, July 24, 1896. H. People's Party Platform. Adopted at St. Louis, July 24, 1896. Direct Legislation We favor a system of direct legislation, through the initiative and referendum, under proper constitutional safeguards. General Propositions FIRST. We demand the election of President, Vice-President, and United States Senators by a direct vote of the people SEVENTH. We demand a graduated income tax to the end that aggregated wealth shall bear its just proportion of taxation, and we regard the recent decision of the Supreme Court relative to the Income Tax law as a misinterpretation of the Constitution and an invasion of the rightful powers of Congress over the subject of taxation.
