Background Fosters the development of common standards for RE in the APEC member economies. Facilitate renewable energy related trade and investment liberalization. Review and documentation of available standards for off-grid and grid-interactive renewable energy system applications in APEC member economies. May 11, 2004

Objective Development of harmonized standards for renewable energy Growth in renewable energy businesses due to increased opportunities among APEC member economies Development of renewable energy technology and infrastructure due to greater access, lower cost as a result of economies of scale benefits, and expansion of the renewable energy market May 11, 2004

Contractor ISP (Institute for Sustainable Power), the US was selected to implement the project through competitive bidding. Two partners are: GSES(Global Sustainable Energy Solutions) from Australia and CREIA(Chinese Renewable Energy Industries Association) from China May 11, 2004

Activities Accomplished Survey of Available Standards Needs Assessment Stakeholder Workshop (through internet) Action Plan Renewable Energy Standards Resource Guide May 11, 2004

Key deliverables include Completion of a survey on the existing standards Development of an Action Plan Distribution by the Consultant of the draft RE standards resource guide Finalization of the resource guide on renewable energy standards May 11, 2004

Main Content in the Action Plan Key issues in Standards Development Most effective ways to develop, harmonize, and promote renewable energy standards Action 1: Establish APEC renewable energy Standards Secretariat Action 2: Selection of pilot standards and economies Action 3:Establish hardware/systems Technical Standards Committees May 11, 2004

Summary of Recommendations Scope limitation (e.g. Solar, Wind, and Biomass Structure The EGNRET establishes an APEC RE Standards Secretariat The Secretariat defines three priority technologies and three to five APEC economies in which to pilot the standard and harmonization The Secretariat identified subject matter experts for each of the three priority technology areas to constitute the Technical/Task Analysis Committees and appoint the chair of the committee May 11, 2004
