Gamification for Educators

Objectives This training aims to Provide trainers and team leaders with basic knowledge of gamification strategies with the aim to improve the learning experience (Training session, TLS and so forth) Help trainers and team leaders to create highly engaging learning content using “game thinking” methodology Agenda Introduction Activity: Let us play Game Elements Thinking Like a game designer Game Dynamics

Activity: Create your own game 20 minutes You work as a training consultant for a company called the KubrikO The National School Board is looking to improve and diversify teaching methodologies for primary school pupils and they have contacted your company. In particular, the Board has asked KubrikO to create a new set of games to teach students the importance of recycling. Your task is to create a game which will help teachers to achieve these educational objectives: Learn what the recycling overall process is Understand the value of recycling for the environment Understand how to proper recycle items You can use pens, paper, colour, calculators and so forth.

Definition of a game What is a game? A game is a system in which players engage in an abstract challenge, defined by rules, interactivity, and feedback, that results in a quantifiable outcome, often eliciting an emotional reaction. Gamification is using game-based mechanics, aesthetics, and game thinking to engage people, motivate action, promote learning, and solve problems. Game thinking is approaching the design process from the perspective of actions and activities, applying the mechanics of games to nongame situations

Structural vs Content Gamification of Learning Two types of approaches Content Gamification You reach the objectives set by the training via the use of games. Making the content more game like applying element of games. Structural Gamification You do not change the agenda. But apply game elements to the same agenda.

Element of a game What make a game.. a game Goals, Rules, and Objectives Conflict, Cooperation, and Competition Feedback Reward and Achievement Points and Badges + Leader boards Level Storytelling Failure and Repeat Scoring

Game Dynamic Rules for games Race and Escape Collecting, acquiring and allocating Mystery and Discover Strategy Constructing and Creating Pattern Recognition
