What is Deductive Reasoning? Deductive Reasoning is a form of logic. Logic is the ability to draw conclusion or inferences from known or assumed evidence. Deductive reasoning uses a top-down approach. This means that you have a generalized statement and apply this statement to a specific instance. Caveat: The generalized statement and the specific instance need to be logically related to what is going on.

Are these statements logical? Is the deduction actual fact? Fact: All athletes work out in the gym. Fact: Jenna is an athlete. What conclusion can you draw? Therefore, Jenna works out in the gym. Fact: All students eat pizza. Fact: Frank is a student at the UW. What conclusion can you draw? Therefore, Frank eats Pizza

How does deductive reasoning benefit an investigation? Deductive reasoning is a thought process that investigators use to assemble the piece of a criminal puzzle to reach a logical conclusion. http://www.drmauricegodwin.com/serialkillers/img30.gif

Fingerprinting Crimes Article Activity Goal: To create a poster of an crime in history involving fingerprinting. To identify how deductive reasoning is used within the investigation of this crime to help solve the crime.

Criteria for Poster What you must have on your Poster: A short summary of the crime (NOT THE OUTCOME). A timeline of either the events of the crime (if possible) OR a timeline of the events during the investigation. Summary of the Outcome of the Events Explanation of how deductive reasoning was used during the investigation. (YOU NEED AT LEAST TWO EXAMPLES). Explanation of how fingerprints helped to solve this case. DUE: Tomorrow at the beginning of the period. Yes, I know there are short classes!
