6GEO3 Unit 3 Contested Planet Energy Security Presented by Mrs P Aidoo-Sarkodie

This session will cover: Key information about what the exams will look like What the examiner is looking for Preparation for the exams

Key information Exam board: Edexcel B Number of exams: 3 Length of exams: 1 ½ hours Equipment required: Two black pens, a ruler, eraser and calculator Dates of exams: Paper 1: Tuesday 21st May pm. paper 2: Wednesday 5th June pm. Paper 3: Thursday 13th June am

Paper 1 Topic 1: Hazardous Earth (Global temperatures, the atmosphere and climate, Cyclones, Tectonics and Tectonic Hazards) Topic 2: Development Dynamics (Development & Population, How countries develop & Development models and India) Topic 3: Challenges of an urbanising world (Urbanisation, Economic and population changes and Mumbai) Assessed by; 1 hour 30 minute examination 94 marks in total (4 of these are SPaG) Worth 37.5% of the final grade. There are a variety of question type on this paper. You must answer every question on this paper

Paper 2 Topic 4: The UK’s evolving physical landscape - including Coastal change and conflict, and River processes and pressures. Topic 5: The UK’s evolving human landscape - including a case study of a major UK city (London). Topic 6: Geographical Investigations. This includes 2 fieldwork investigations - 1 human and 1 physical linked to topics 4 and 5. (Urban-London and Coasts-Christchurch Bay) Assessed by; 1 hour 30 minutes examination. 94 marks in total (4 of these are SPaG) Worth 37.5% of the final grade. There are a variety of question types on this paper. You must answer all questions in section A and B. In section C you only answer the questions linked to the type of fieldwork we have completed.

Topic 6: Geographical Investigations. Paper 2 - Section C Topic 6: Geographical Investigations. This includes 2 fieldwork investigations - 1 human and 1 physical linked to topics 4 and 5. (Urban-London and Coasts-Christchurch Bay) In Section C1 answer either Question 8 or Question 9(students need to answer question 8 in this section). In Section C2 answer either Question 10 or Question 11(our students need to answer question 10).

Paper 3 Topic 7: People and the biosphere. Topic 8: Forests under threat. Topic 9: Consuming Energy resources. This paper contains a Decision Making Exercise based on the three topics covered in this component. Assessed by; 1 hour 30 minutes examination. 64 marks in total (4 of these are SPaG) Worth 25% of the final grade. You must answer all questions on this paper. A resource booklet will be provided sharing the issue you will focus on for the decision making element.

Command words used in GCSE Geography exams and their meanings How many marks What is it asking you to do Here’s an example Identify/State/Name 1 Find(e.g on a photo), or give a sample word or statement Identify the landform shown in the photo or name city X on map 2. Define Give a clear meaning Define the term “fertility rate’ Calculate 1 or 2 Work out Calculate the mean depth of the river shown in figure 2 Label Print the name of, or write on a map or diagram Label two features of the cliff in figure 4 Draw 2 or 3 Sketch or draw a line/diagram Draw a line to complete the graph in figure 3 Describe Say what something is like, identify trends (e.g on a graph) Describe the trend shown in Figure 1 Compare 3 Identify similarities or differences (referring to a graph) Compare the rate of population growth in city X with city Y

Explain 2,3,or 4 Give reasons why something happens Using examples, explain the rapid growth of a city you have studied Suggest Give a well-reasoned guess to explain something. Usually relates to a geographical resource such as a photo that you have not seen before. Suggest reasons why flooding has become more frequent along this river (in the photograph) in recent years. Assess 8 Weigh up which is the most/least important Assess the need for coastal management along a stretch of coast you have studied Evaluate Make judgements about which is most or least effective Evaluate the methods used in collecting data in your fieldwork Select and justify (only used in Paper 3) 12 Give evidence to support your case Select and justify the best option for the future of XXXX
