2 What is the structure of the Unit 1 exam?
Total marks for the paper: 54

3 What is the difference between Higher and Foundation papers?
Some multiple choice questions to guide students. Command words such as ‘describe’ will be more frequent, with ‘explain’ or ‘compare’ used very occasionally. Last question is out of 6 marks for content and 4 marks for SPAG = nearly 20% of the paper. Higher paper: No multiple choice questions to guide students. Command words such as ‘explain’ and ‘examine’ will be used more frequently. The last question on the paper will be out of 9 for content with a further 4 marks for SPAG = nearly 25% of the marks for the paper. This is intended to stretch more able students to A* / AS Level.

Remember: Even when not asked, if you know an example, use it in your answer – you will get credit

Remember: Understanding command word = answering question directly = Top marks! Higher paper: ‘Examine’ / ‘Discuss’: Need to assess, evaluate, come to a view and justify

8 TIME MANAGEMENT YOU SHOULD SPEND 30 MINUTES ON SECTION A (SKILLS) AND 30 MINUTES ON SECTION B (CONTENT – CLIMATE & SUST DEV). YOU MAY WANT TO START SECTION B FIRST TO WARM UP AND MAKE SURE YOU’VE HAD ENOUGH TIME TO ANSWER THE IMPORTANT LAST QUESTION WORTH 10 MARKS FOR FOUNDATION AND 13 MARKS FOR HIGHER. THIS MAY AVOID LAST MINUTE RUSHING DUE TO SPENDING TOO LONG ON THE MAP SKILLS QUESTIONS.

10 Don’t cut your marks! Make sure you write your answers on the lines or boxes provided. Any answers written in the margins or elsewhere will not be seen by the examiner.
