8th 4.2 Ionic and Covalent Bonds Chemical Bonds 8th 4.2 Ionic and Covalent Bonds

Ionic and Covalent Bonds Ion – atom that loses or gains an electron If an atom gains an electron = negative (-) If an atom loses an electron = positive (+) Ionic Bond – bonds created from elements losing or gaining electrons Na+ Cl- come together to make NaCl

Ionic and Covalent Bonds Compound – pure substance that contains 2 or more elements Covalent Bond – share electrons Creates full outer electron shell Molecule – substance created by 2 elements

Ionic and Covalent Bonds Polar Molecule – unbalanced charges (poles) Non-polar molecule – balanced charges Chemical formula – combination of chemical symbols of elements that tells what elements are present H2O 2H2S 4(CH3OH) 2H H2
