Welcome to Knowledge-Building Teacher Network

What is the “Knowledge Building Teacher Professional Development Network” (KBTN)? Students engaging in inquiry in knowledge-building communities for 21st century learning supported by technology -Addresses goals of educational reforms Teacher Professional Development Network (community) A group of EMB (Ministry) seconded teachers working together mentoring new teachers on using knowledge building, supported with knowledge building theory, pedagogy & technology --To sustain and to scale up innovations & good practice in schools

Empowering communities and transforming learning through technology Knowledge building communities – contribution and added value to community mediated by progressive inquiry and discourse - analogous to scientific communities Learning for 21st century – three metaphors of learning (acquisition, acculturation & knowledge creation) Technology - Knowledge Forum with suite of assessment tools and data mining Different aspects are intersecting and intertwined

Heading Into Deep Water “Mom and Pop” as Salomon once put it.

Overview What is knowledge building? What about Knowledge Forum 4.7? How to conduct curriculum Innovation in School? How to plan your curriculum for Knowledge Building?

Some Benefits of knowledge building Literacy Argumentation, Metacognition, questions, explanation, theories Dialogical thinking .. Working with others Values

What is the difference between knowledge building and online learning? Big blackboard? Big File?

Creation and improvement of ideas and knowledge collectively Communities of learners…scientists

Knowledge Building Principles 1) Agency (Self-learning, inquiry) 2) Community Knowledge (Collaborative learning) 3) Rise Above (Deepening) 4) Improvable Ideas (Sustained efforts) 5) Reflective assessment

Curriculum Design – Principles

Principles & Curriculum Design for KB (1) Component 1 – How to develop collaborative culture in classroom Agency/Community Knowledge Students working with each other Putting out ideas to public for improvement- group work, inquiry-based learning, jig-saw, knowledge-building ‘walls’etc

Principles & Curriculum Design for KB (2) Component 2 – How to Start collaborative Inquiry Using Knowledge Forum Epistemic Agency….Community Knowledge Design and integrate curriculum with knowledge-building - Big ideas…Key problems…Inquiry-based…information search Scaffolds Design of views; Student grouping Other questions - Should I set a question; how to set a question? how to encourage students to contribute…

Scaffolds (thinking prompts) Theory Building I need to understand My theory New Information A better theory This theory cannot explain Putting our knowledge together Argumentation My standpoint Reason Elaboration Evidence Examples Interpretation Rebuttal Synthesis

Scaffolds for New Learning/Conceptual Change ? English Language? Project Learning?

Teacher’s Instructions in each discussion view

Design for Knowledge Building (3) Component Three – How to deepen discussion? Rise Above KB Talk - Integrate knowledge building with class activity (e.g., discuss KF work in class; class activity in KF) Knowledge Management View maintenance Students as experts Rise above…. Summary notes.. New views etc. Focus on progress and idea improvement

Debate on Shifting Cultivation

View’s under student’s maintenance

Design for knowledge building (4) Component Four – How to Assess Student’s Understanding? Reflective Assessment Using Assessment to scaffold and foster knowledge building Tools (Applets, journals, rubrics, portfolio etc.) Individual to Collective How to teach well without teaching? How to assess well without over-assessing?

Designing a Curriculum Unit Collaborative learning Inquiry Use of scaffolds KF function Deepening discourse Continuous Assessment

Portfolio Instructions posed by teacher
