Europeans Explore the East The main reason for European Exploration was new sources of wealth Bartolomeu Dias (a Portuguese explorer) explained his motives to explore as “to serve God and His Majesty, to give light to those who were in darkness and to grow rich as all men desire” Prince Henry had dreams of exploration overseas beginning in 1415, when he helped conquer the Muslim City of Cueta. In 1498, Vasco De Gama reached the port of Calicut. They found spices, rare silks, and gems.

Within years, Portuguese ships began coming down the Western Coast of Africa. When Prince Henry died in 1460, the Portuguese established a series of trading posts along the shores of Africa. They traded gold and ivory.
