USS Maine In January 1898, the USS Maine was sent to Cuba to help the Cubans. On February 15, the ship exploded and sank.

Declaration of War On April 25, 1898, USA declared war on Spain.

War comes to an End The war came to an end in August 1898. Result of the War Cuba became an independent nation. United States gained the territories of Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam. United States emerged as world power.

Short, but important war!
