2 War With Spain While the US, Japan, and some European countries were gaining colonies, Spain’s once vast American empire now consisted of Cuba and Puerto Rico Cubans, hungry for independence, revolt against Spanish rule.

3 C. Yellow Journalism Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were competing for readers. To attract readers, Pulitzer and Hearst printed exaggerated and sensational stories. Called Yellow Journalism

4 3. Printed vivid stories of Spanish brutality in Cuba.
4. Hearst telegraph to Remington in Cuba: “You furnish the pictures, and I’ll furnish the war.”

5 D. William McKinley, a supporter of Cuban independence was elected in Cleveland was opposed to US involvement. E. De Lome Letter Enrique Dupuy de Lome, Spanish minister to the US, insulted McKinley in a letter. Outraged many Americans

6 F. The USS Maine was in Havana Harbor in Cuba protecting US citizens and economic interests.
February 15th, 1898, USS Maine explodes and sank. 266 men killed.

7 2. American press immediately blamed Spain.
3. “Remember the Maine” became rallying cry.

8 G. US authorized money to prepare for war and demanded that Spain leave Cuba.
H. Teller Amendment stated that the US had no interest in taking control of Cuba.
