The 6 Regions of Canada The Canadian Shield

The Land More than half of Canada is covered by the Canadian Shield. It touches all of Canada’s provinces and territories except B.C, Yukon, and the Atlantic Provinces. Most of the Shield is flat with rounded hills of rock which are actually the roots of ancient mountains.

Two types of rock, igneous and metamorphic, form most of the Shield. These rocks contain valuable minerals in great quantities (lead, gold, nickel, copper, zinc).

Many towns and cities, such as Sudbury (Ontario), Thompson (Manitoba), and Yellowknife (NWT), rely on the mining industry for jobs. The Shield is well suited to mining but it is ill suited to farming because it has very thin soils.

Glaciers gouged and scraped the bedrock creating depressions that filled with water forming the hundreds of thousands of lakes that are now found in the shield.
