Introducing MATHCOUNTS

What is MATHCOUNTS? A national middle school coaching and competitive mathematics program Promotes mathematics achievement through a series of fun and engaging "bee" style contests Exists in all 50 states, U.S. territories, Department of Defense and State Department schools Supported by the National Society of Professional Engineers at the state and local levels

National Student Recognition President Obama Honors MATHCOUNTS National Finalists in Oval Office WASHINGTON, D.C. June 28, 2010 For the tenth consecutive year, MATHCOUNTS ( National Competition Champions were honored to receive congratulations from the President of the United States in the Oval Office. President Barack Obama greeted the top finishers in the 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition, including the individual champion and coach, runner-up and coach, and first place California state team and coach in an Oval Office ceremony on June 28, 2010.

MATHCOUNTS Leadership

Competition Training District Monday Nights Led by Brandy Woods Assisted by Robert Allen Campus Coaches ExxonMobil Volunteers Location rotates between campuses Campus Meetings Led by the Campus Coach Meet at least once per week before or after school Have approximately 70 student participants

What does the competition look like? Consists of 4 rounds Round 1: Sprint Round 30 problems in 40 minutes Graded for accuracy Worth 1 point each No calculators

Round 2: Target Round 4 sets of 2 problems 6 minutes per set Features multistep problems that engage mathematical reasoning and problem solving Calculators allowed

Round 3: Team Round 1 team per campus 4 members per team 10 problems 2 points each Conversation & Calculators allowed Teams submit only one answer sheet

Round 4: Countdown Round Fast paced Oral competition Similar to Jeopardy Participants chosen are those who scored highest in Rounds 1 and 2 Bracket format

Sample Problem On Monday Eulers Bakery discounted the price of pies 20 %. On Tues it discounted the price of pies an additional 70%. What is the combined discount?

Solution Correct Answer:76% Common Misconception 90%

Sample Problem Stephan need to pick a 4 digit code for his bank card. He decides that he will only use single-digit prime numbers. He also wants to make sure he does not use the same digit twice in a row. How many codes can be formed following Stephans guidelines?

Solution Correct answer: 108 Common Misconception: 4! = 24
