Presentation transcript:

King Jehoshaphat 1 Kings 22:41-44 Basically a good king Did what was right, like his father Asa King Asa led Judah to give their whole heart to the Lord, removed many high places, but then did evil by making an alliance with Syria (2 Chron )

King Jehoshaphat 1 Kings 22:41-44 Basically a good king Jehoshaphat did as his father, but did not finish the war against idolatry And he made peace with Ahab, the wicked king of Israel!

Is Seeking Peace Bad? In our time we would give Jehoshaphat the Nobel Peace Prize (healed wounds that went back 100 years) But who did he make peace with? –Ahab (1 Kings 16:30-33); Jezebel (1 Kings 18:13) His son Jehoram married Athaliah, Ahab and Jezebels daughter (2 Chron. 18:1) –Linked the lineage of David to that of the most wicked ruler of Israel - probably saw it as a cheap price to pay for peace

The Price of Unholy Peace As Ahabs ally he was pulled into war and almost killed (2 Chron. 18) Reprimanded by God (2 Chron. 19:1- 3) Still tried to keep peace with Israel (2 Chron. 20:35-37) Allied in an economic endeavor Again reprimanded Ships destroyed

The Price of Unholy Peace The true price of peace (2 Chron. 21:4-6, 12-19) –Son Jehoram was evil; idolatry returned –Jehoram murdered his brothers He would die painfully, the people sickened –Philistines invaded, children lost –Suffered a painful 2 year death –His wife Athaliah later tried to murder all remaining heirs (2 Chron. 22:10-12) Jehoshaphat never imagined the true cost of his unholy peace

King Jehu The Rest of the Story (2 Kings 9:6- 10) –Jehus mission was to straighten out the mess Jehoshaphat had made –Both messengers ask Is it peace? Jehu asks, What have you to do with peace? 2 Kings 9:16-20 –There can be no peace with wickedness; both Joram and Ahaziah killed 2 Kings 9:21-27 –Jezebel thrown down, eaten by dogs, no compromise, no peace 2 Kings 9:30-37

Today Peace at what cost? –2 Corinthians 6:14-18 –Ephesians 5:11 –James 4:4 - we cant make peace with Gods enemies without becoming an enemy of God

Conclusion Seeking peace is desirable, but not peace at all costs. Peace based on following Gods word is the only true peace. Peace with Gods enemies only causes more harm to ourselves and others.

Will You Become A Christian? Hear The Gospel (Rom. 10:17) Believe in Jesus as the Son of God (John 8:24) Repent of Your Sins (Acts 17:30) Confess Jesus as the Son of God (Acts 8:37) Be Baptized for Forgiveness of Sins (Acts 2:38) Live Faithfully Until You Die (Rev. 2:10)
