Warm Up What led to the United States getting into WWI? Why did this event lead to the US getting into the war?

End of WWI and Russian Revolution Mood

Total War War was not only on the battlefield, but also for civilians. Governments took control of the economy, and transformed them to help in the war effort. Rationing is common, everything from steel to butter was limited by the war effort.

Allies Win the War Russia withdraws from the war, and the United States enters on the Allied side. This allows Germany to attempt a final offensive with all forces. A force of 2 million American troops along with other allied forces begin moving towards Germany after Second Battle of Marne.

Meeting at Versailles The war ends with the German Kaiser abdicating his throne on November 9th. 11/11/1918, the war ends, at the eleventh hour. The peace process begins with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919.

Peace Terms Britain, France, United States, and Italy. Germany and the new Soviet Union not represented. Wilson calls for his plan of fourteen points to guarantee peace process.

The Results Treaty of Versailles finally signed June 28th, 1919. League of Nations created, but it was a weak organization. Germany lost substantial territory, restrictions placed on military, and reparations had to be paid.

New Countries Austria and Hungary separate nations, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia independent as well. Russia had land losses, and Ottoman Empire no more.

The Costs of War in Europe Brought war to a global scale. Colonies forced into combat 8-10 million soldiers dead, 21 million wounded. Countless farmlands, cities, and lives destroyed. Nazism comes from Germany’s treatment after World War I

World War One Leaders Triple Alliance (Central Powers) Germany: Kaiser Wilhelm II Austria-Hungary: Franz Joseph I Ottoman Empire: Mehmed Talat Pasha Triple Entente (Allies) Britain: David Lloyd George France: Georges Clemenceau Russia/Soviet Union: Tsar Nicholas II/ Vladimir Lenin (1917) United States: Woodrow Wilson

Russian Revolution Tsar Nicholas II (1894-1917) “Bloody Nicholas” Absolute Ruler Oppressive Reign

The March Revolution It began with a strike in 1917 over food shortages. The Tsar would abdicate his throne, and a provisional government was interred. The provisional government continues war and bad polices.

Vladimir Lenin Became a revolutionary after brother was executed. Bro was attempting to assassinate the Tsar. Becomes “Father of the Russian Revolution”

The Bolshevik Revolution Civil war between provisional government and Bolsheviks White army vs Red Army Lenin leads Bolsheviks to victory 1918-1920:15 million killed over three years.

New Philosophy, New Russia Russia now called: Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) Soviet Union New Economic Policy Communism Major industry controlled by the government. Wealth is equal across society Complete government control of distribution of goods and resources

Lenin vs. Stalin Joseph Stalin comes to power (1924-1953) Lenin= Pure Communism Stalin= Totalitarian Communism

Stalin’s Disappearing People If Stalin didn’t like you, you were banished from the country. And any connections between you and Stalin are cut. He cut you out of his life, and his pictures, and the history of Russia.

Now you see him

Now you don’t

Now you see them
